SKY REMAINS BLUE REVIEW: OMO FINALLY E DON HAPPEN UNBEATEN RUN DON END..DEM DON BEAT CHELSEA
After 13 games winning streak..Chelsea were looking forward to making history by becoming the team to have won 14 games back to back in the premier league and in a single season but the big hurdle to cross was a Spurs team coming off a 4 match unbeaten run at white Hart lane.
For some reason, it was the only game of the night from the busy festive period fixtures..it was adjudged to be the two best defences in the premier league pitched against each other so both Mauricio Pochettino and Antonio Conte must have known what to expect..but at the end of the day it was the boys from the lane that looked the more hungrier as they marshalled every single department of the field giving Chelsea no room for their kind of football..when I saw Dembele and Wayanma in midfield(two Africans with strength and well built physique) I knew Chelsea were in for a big test and I expected Willian to start in place of Pedro. The Spaniard had little or no impact in the game because he was constantly caged by the presence of the two Spurs macho men in midfield..only Matic could compete with them as Ngolo Kante was also not inspiring with lots of
The game was very cagey from the start until the last minute of the first half when Christian Erickson produced a moment of real quality, floating a fine cross for Dele Alli to head home the opener..1-0 at the break..everybody expected the second half to be fireworks as they were of the notion that Chelsea will do a replica of that game in Etihad against Mancity, where they came all out to get the equaliser..
Chelsea took the game to SpurS’s own half, apparently not ready to lose all points. But the big blow came when the unexpected happened..The mecurial Eriksen popped up again on the right side with yet another pinpoint cross to find Dele Alli again and the England international made no mistake to double the Homesides lead..
It was poor defending from the Chelsea backline who while able to keep Harry Kane quiet had no answer to Alli..Thibaut Courtuois didn’t do well as he should have commanded his goal better. If his defenders were already picking Alli up, he should have stayed on his line..and it’s even more painful because Chelsea had so many wrong passes and missed opportunities..Willian came in for Alonso who for me has not fully recovered from the injury as he was not his usual self..Costa and Hazard did the best they could but it wasn’t just their night as most of Chelsea’s counter attacks were either marred by faulty passes or the resilient defending from Pochettino’s men..
So it was sweet revenge for Spurs last night, as last November Chelsea had came from behind to beat them 2-1 at Stamfordbridge.
2-0 was how it ended and Chelsea’s winning run brought to a crushing end as Spurs extended their run to five..
