THE RISE & FALL OF R.KELLY
IN the early 90’s Robert Kelly had the American RnB scene at his feet. He debuted in 1992 with the group Public Announcement who had hits like “She got that Vibe” and “Honey Love”. His Unmistakable Vocal Talent was quickly noticed especially condidering he wrote most of the songs in the Groups’ first Album Born in the 90’s. In 1993, Kelly went solo with the album “12 play” a smash hit that saw hit tracks like “Bump n grind” and “Your body’s calling”.
R.kelly in his prime
R.Kelly’s career took off from there and was on a seemingly endless upward trajectory. Hits after Hits saw him become one of the best-selling music artists in the United States, with over 30 million album sales. He has released 12 solo studio albums, and sold over 75 million albums and singles worldwide, making him the most successful RNB male artist of the 1990s and one of the Best selling Music Artists of all time. He is credited for helping redefine R&B and HipHop earning the nicknames the “King of R&B” and “King of Pop-Soul”.He is listed by Billboard as the most successful R&B/Hip Hop artist of the years 1985-2010 and the most successful R&B artist in history. He has won awards including Grammy’s (1998 for i beleive i can fly) BET, Soul Train, Billboard, NAACP, and American Music Awards.
But in all the Genius that the man possessed lay a demon inside, beneath the surface. Kelly has been the subject of numerous allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct, often with underage girls, all charges he “categorically denies”. In 2002 he was indicted on 13 counts of Child Pornography but was acquitted of all charges. Of course we all recall in 1994 the Musical Symbiosis he had with the now Late Aaliyah who was 15 at the time while he was 27. A musically legal combination, as they churned out chart topping hits back to back, but the moment rumors began to emerge that he and the under-aged aaliyah were Romantically involved the eyebrows began to raise given their age difference. Then there was the allegation that they had secretly married without her parents’ knowledge, reports later revealed a marriage certificate that listed the couple married on August 31, 1994, in Sheraton Gateway Suites in Chicago.Aaliyah, who was 15 at the time, was listed as 18 on the certificate; the illegal marriage was discovered and annulled in February 1995 by her parents. The pair continued to deny marriage allegations, stating that neither was married.
Aliyah reportedly developed a friendship with Kelly during the recording of her debut album. As she recalled to Vibe magazine in 1994, she and Kelly would “go watch a movie” and “go eat” when she got tired and would then “come back and work”. She described the relationship between her and Kelly as being “rather close.”
Aaliyah and Rkelly had an inappropriate relationship
In 2016, Kelly said that he was as in love with Aaliyah as he was with “anybody else.”In December 1994, Aaliyah told the Sun-Times that whenever she was asked about being married to Kelly, she urged them not to believe “all that mess” and that she and Kelly were “close” and “people took it the wrong way.”In his 2011 book The Man Behind the Man: Looking From the Inside Out, Demetrius Smith Sr., a former member of Kelly’s entourage, wrote that Kelly told him “in a voice that sounded as if he wanted to burst into tears” that he thought Aaliyah was pregnant. However this was never proven and over the years the two grew apart.
In the years following, Aaliyah passed on, but Kelly never could shake his proclivity for young girls. Fast forward to2019, An Illinois judge set R.kelly’s bond at $1 million on Saturday, one day after the singer was charged with 10 counts of criminal sexual abuse for incidents that allegedly occurred between 1998 and 2010.
Kelly, 52, showed up for his first court appearance since turning himself in to authorities Saturday morning with attorney Steve Greenberg, who told the judge his client was not a flight risk.
R.Kelly in court
“Contrary to the song, Mr. Kelly doesn’t like to fly,” Greenberg said in a reference to one of Kelly’s biggest hits.
The judge called the charges against Kelly, which involve four alleged victims ― three of whom were under age 17 at the time ― “disturbing.”
Afterward, Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx revealed several new details about the case, referring to the alleged victims only by their initials.
Kelly met one while signing an autograph outside the courthouse where his 2008 child pornography trial was held, Foxx said. The singer has denied any wrongdoing.
“J.P.,” the autograph seeker, met Kelly when she was under age 17, Foxx alleged. Knowing her age, Kelly repeatedly invited J.P. to his home and allegedly assaulted her between 2009 and 2010, sometimes while choking or spitting on her.
Foxx said that another alleged victim, “H.W.,” met Kelly at her 16th birthday party and that he was well aware of her age. She was given a business card with Kelly’s contact information, but her mother took it away citing her daughter’s age. H.W. managed to retrieve the card from her mother’s purse, Foxx said, and used it to contact Kelly, who invited her over to his studio.
When H.W.’s father dropped her off for school, the attorney said, she ordered a cab to take her to the studio, where Kelly allegedly assaulted her but had difficulty maintaining an erection. She then left with an envelope full of more cash than needed to pay for the cab rides to and from her school.
Foxx said that similar incidents occurred about once a month over the course of a year between 1998 and 1999.
“R.L” was 14 years old at the time Kelly first assaulted her, Foxx said. The singer allegedly made a videotape of the sexual encounters said to have taken place between 1998 and 2001; both subjects make reference to the teen’s young age.
Attorney Michael Avenatti, who represents R.L., described the tape in more detail at a friday press confrence in which he claimed that other, similar videos exist.
A 24-year-old hairdresser, “L.C.,” was alone in a room waiting for Kelly to arrive for a 2003 hair appointment when she says she was attacked, Foxx said. L.C. managed to resist while Kelly allegedly attempted to force her to perform oral sex, but the singer still ejaculated onto her body and spit on her, she says.
Greenberg told reporters that Kelly would have to work to come up with $1,000,000 ― the amount of his total bond needed to secure release from jail.
It is said that if R kelly is sentenced after proven guilty he could be put away in prison for a very long time. For a man of 52, your guess is as good as mine what would have become of his legacy
