SPURS 1-ARSENAL 0: DERBY BLUES FOR WENGER’S MEN
The Big game has come and Gone. And its Arsenal left picking up the crumbs off the Wembley stadium turf. The game over all was underwhelming for me. I had expected a much better contest between these two teams but instead what was served was a cagey, dull affair. Arsenal who were supposed to still be basking in their Acquisition of Aubameyang and Mhkitaryan served up a tame display that was very disappointing. Was it the tactics or just another bad day in the office? Its hard to say. The news of Aaron Ramsey being out for the game was a massive blow for Arsenal as his runs from Midfield into the box were badly missed. The away record for Arsenal remains an embarrassment this was their Sixth loss away from home, they have drawn 4 and won 3.
Again it was Harry Kane the regular suspect who secured the bragging rights for Tottenham in the North London derby against Arsenal. And its annoying for Arsenal fans as he just always keeps scoring against us.
The England striker bagged his 32nd goal of the season to just moments after half time to fire Spurs up to third.
The result piles more misery on the Embattled Gunners who have now lost their last three away games.
Kane had the best chance of a largely Dull1st half at Wembley but headed over the bar as the contest remained deadlocked at the break.
But four minutes into the second period the hotshot pounced.
SPURS full-back Ben Davies whipped in an early cross, and Kane rose above static Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny to head the ball down past Petr Cech and into the net. 1-0 Spurs. You’d have thought that would ginger a reaction from the men in Red but No..Instead it was Spurs who should have gone out to put more goals past a listless looking Arsenal team.
Mhkitaryan had a bad game and was subbed
Gunners ‘keeper Cech, who has not kept a clean sheet in his last nine Prem matches, Turned into saviour for Arsenal as he made crucial saves from Dele Alli, and Trippier to keep the scoreline at 1-0.
The former Chelsea man did well to deny first Kane and then Kieran Trippier from extending the lead.
Big money signing from DortmundPierre-Emerick Aubameyang was having his first taste of the derby, but alongside his team-mates, they failed to get a shot on target until deep into the second period. He was not seeing the ball as much as you’d like and that was down to the supply from Midfield..it just wasn’t there. Elneny is a limited player who though will run his socks off for the team, is notoriously incapable of the kind of distribution to add to the Gunners ammunition in offence. And like i mentioned earlier, the industry and cleverness Ramsey brings to the Middle was lacking.
Jack Wilshere, who impressed again in the Gunners midfield, unleashed a stunning long-range effort that forced Hugo Lloris into a smart save but routine save.
So here we were , 70 something odd minutes gone and we were behind and in need of a goal fast.
Arsene Wenger introduced Alexandre Lacazette from the bench in an attempt to try and at least claim a point.
And the Frenchman had two chances to make himself a hero but spurned both opportunities.
First the 26-year-old found himself in the box as a cross located him unmarked, but he made a complete bollox of it as he shot high over the bar. It was a horrible miss but worse was to come.
Lacazette couldn’t believe his miss
Deep into injury time after a lovely ball from Alex iwobi Split the defence and found him Lacazette, rolled a shot wide of the goal, much to the despair and disbelief of the few remaining visiting supporters.
With that Missed chance, Arsenal’s chances of finishing in the top four became severely dented, with Wenger’s men currently six off Liverpool and five behind fifth-placed Chelsea.
Tensions threatened to boil over after the full time whistle as Wilshere and Erik Lamela had to be separated by their team-mates after they resumed a rancour that was on all though the game.
After the game Wenger said:
“In the first half we missed three or four opportunities on the counter attack which is difficult to swallow, always the final ball. We contained them to very little.
“Once they scored you could see we were wobbling and they could have scored more but in the last 10 minutes we should have come back to 1-1.” We need to be more efficient with Chances but this was a bad day at the office.
There remains no change to our game away from home. Even with our new Signings, we still look shorn of idas and Wenger needs to Gel his new boys bedded in quickly. Top 4 may be gone but theres’ still a lot of defining games to come. Mancity in the Carabao cup is a Must win. Hopefully we take the lessons here against that fixture.
