EUROPA: ARSENAL FINISH OFF AC MILAN 3-1 AGG (5-1)

I remember by the time Arsenal was heading to Italy for the first leg they were in a terrible place. They had just lost Three Games on the trot. The Carrabao Cup Final , The game to Mancity at home and then the game at Brighton..Confidence was at its lowest and not a few predicted that AC Milan would breeze this tie over 2 legs. But fast forward 2 weeks and the Story is different. Arsenal have Qualified for the Quarter finals of the Europa League while Milan are Out.. 5-1 on Aggregate is quite emphatic and looks to Suggest the Gunners have found some form. The alternative route back into the Champions League was still open for Wenger and his men and it looks like they intend to make the most of it.

The AC milan team had opened with energy and purpose at the Emirates Stadium as they sought to make amends for a 2-0 defeat in the first leg and Hakan Calhanoglu pulled one back with a sweet strike from distance.

The goal meant the tie was alive but the goal also seemed to rouse Arsenal from their lethargy. Almost immediately they found a better tempo and greater urgency.

Welbeck darted into the penalty area, collected a pass from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, searched for contact from full-back Ricardo Rodriguez and crashed to the ground. There was contact but the question is was it enough? Welbeck Stepped up and buried the penalty amid Protests from MILAN Boss Gattuso.

Welbeck confirmed the impressive aggregate scoreline with a firm header for his second goal of the game

Arsenal resisted, however, and stretched away with late goals as their opponents took risks, left holes at the back and eventually faded.

Granit Xhaka scored the second, a long range similar to the one he scored vs Liverpool at the Emirates,it was effort which really ought to have been saved.

Milan’s highly-rated young goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnrumma dived to his left and to reach Xhaka’s drive but pushed the ball across his own goal and watched as it spun over the line.

Welbeck added the third, a simple finish from close range after a good run and cross by Jack Wilshere and a save from Donnarumma to deny Aaron Ramsey.

The late goals made it feel like a stroll when it wasn’t. Arsenal at the moment do not do much without first shredding their nerves.

They survived a scare in the first minute when Andre Silva lashed a very good chance into the side-netting and lost captain Laurent Koscielny to a back injury with only 10 minutes gone.

Overall, however, they deserved to win the tie. Across the two legs they were the better team and they have climbed from their trough of woeful form triggered by the Carabao Cup final and they move on in Europe.

The draw for the quarter-finals appears competitive but they are in it and Gattuso is not.
