England 2 -Nigeria 1 Super Eagles fall to Three Lions
England’s Three Lions beat Nigeria’s Super Eagles 2-1 in a High profile pre-2018 FIFA World Cup friendly on Saturday at the Wembley Stadium in London.
It was a match which provided some clues as to how coach Gareth Southgate and Gernot Rohr will line up Their Squads when the World Cup gets underway in two weeks’ time.
First-half goals from Gary Cahill and captain Harry Kane helped England to victory in their penultimate warm-up match before taking on Tunisia, Panama and Belgium in Group G in Russia.
The game was supposed to present a true test for both teams .Nigeria, who also head to Russia, pulled a goal back shortly after the break through Alex Iwobi after Going 2-nil down in the first half. Nigeria only fleetingly threatened the hosts for much of the game.
Southgate looks to still be tinkering his team as he fielded Jesse Lingard alongside fellow attacking midfielder Dele Alli. It provided England with pace and creativity that led to a string of first-half chances. Wing backs Kieran Trippier and Ashley Young added to England’s attacking power. With Jordan Henderson rested after his appearance for Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League final a week earlier, Eric Dier looked confident as the holding player in midfield.
Alex Iwobi pulls one back for Nigeria
Southgate will take comfort from the performance of Cahill whose powerful headed goal from a corner kick after seven minutes will strengthen his claim for a place in the heart of defence. The Three Lions took control of the game in the 39th minute. That was when Kane drilled a shot from the edge of the penalty area and Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho allowed it to squeeze past him. The Super Eagles on the strength of that 1st half performance will need to improve when they take on Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in Group D in Russia. They gave England far too much respect and that is certainly not the way to approach the World cup. The three lions are due to finish their preparations for the World Cup with a friendly against Costa Rica in Leeds on June Thursday. Nigeria on their part play the Czech Republic in a friendly on Wednesday in Austria.
Fans of the Super Eagles praised the game played by Young Tyrone Ebuehi, Alex Iwobi, and John Ogu. While players like Ogenyi Onazi and Joel Obi were singled out for their Poor Displays. The end of the game Heralded the final naming of the Worldcup 23 man Squad and the 2 who were dropped were OLA Aina of Hull City and Mikel Agu. Some where of the Opinion that Onazi and Joel Obi would get the chop on the strength of their Lacklustre performance at Wembley but Caoch Rohr had already made up his mind.
The Team will now go into a closed camping setting for 2 weeks in Austria. Hopefully when we see them file out for the World cup in June 16 we will see a better Prepared Eagles.
