CHELSEA 1 VS BARCELONA 1: STAMFORD BRIDGE CLASH ENDS IN STALEMATE
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE nights are known for their excitement, tension and glamour and when two strong European heavyweights like Chelsa and Barca go at it all the excitement gets ramped up double fold.
Last night Stamford bridge was set, These two hadn’t met since 2012 when Chelsea emerged victorious over 2 legs and somewhere in the air it looked like Barca were geared up for revenge. Chelsea fans were quietly Confident telling all who care to listen that the great Lionel Messi was yet to score against them in 8 Attempts.
Chelsea did not however start this game well. They looked far from confident in the early stages and were making their fans very nervous with a flat openeing display. At one stage the possesion count read an embarrasing 70% to 30% in Barcelona’s favor.
Chelsea were being thrown around Stamford Bridge like a dog with a toy, they couldn’t get the ball. And the rare times they got it..they gave it back straight away to the disappointment of their Home fans.
Willian and to a lesser degree Hazard looked like the only men in Blue that had anything in the locker to trouble Barcelona. Willian had released to great shots that hit the Post..one a curler ,the other a rasping drive from 20yards that left the barca Keeper catching thin air.
William caused Barca trouble throughout the game
The Brazilian finally beat Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen with a feroious drive in the 62 min to send the stadium into Delirium. Chelsea were up and running, on the way to securing a slender first-leg lead and for Barca it must have seemed like Old ghosts coming back to Haunt them. It looked against the run of play as Barcelona who are seven points clear in La Liga, had been superior, prodding the ball around the Bridge as if they owned the place.with Chelsea chasing shadows.
No matter how much possession they had, the Blues were always in it though. But in the 75th minute Chelsea pressed the self destruct button. Andreas Christensen who had looked a bag of nerves all game made a wrong pass that was capitalised on by Barcelona and in a flash Iniesta laid the ball to Messi who made no mistake beating Courtois.
Barca players Celebrate Messi equalizer
He finished with his customary class and composure, and it did not seem to bother him one bit that it was against Chelsea or that he ever had a dry spell against them coming into this game.
Messi scores, no matter who the opposition are. That is just the way it is.
His 75th minute strike protects Barcelona, giving them the comfort of an away goal after cancelling out Willian’s rasping effort 62 minutes in. So you might say its Barcelona’s tie to lose now. At the nou Camp they will be more Clinical and ferocious. But Chelsea can take solace in the fact that they’ve done it before they can do it again.
