Bournemouth vs Manchester United : Match day 1 report
Alas the new season is upon us. The effect of the agonizing period of incessant transfer speculation finally takes the backseat for the adrenaline filled rush of actual competitive football.
As a united fan , I was deeply satisfied with out transfer business (rating it a glorious 10/10). However , as we have seen in the doomed Van Gaal era, seemingly good transfer business does not really cascade to performance.
I was excited about the way Mourinho was going to set up. Over the years I have grown to hate Mourinho as a coach of a rival team. His arrogance and siege mentality were a bit distasteful but I surprisingly found myself warming to him. Initial reservation quickly morphed into admiration at his attention to detail . Jose had , in one swoop , addressed our major faults join one transfer window. On paper we look complete and formidable.
The first game was without Pogba and understandably so due to his carryover suspension. The starting 11 wasn’t too bad , but I wasn’t about to start complaining at Jose’s set up. He has earned the immunity he deserves to enjoy. The first 25 minutes were a bit drab , not much in terms of goal mouth action. United , while being solid in formation , were not spectacular. There was too much probing going on and not much going on in the final third. We hadn’t scored , but at least we weren’t behind ( silver lining ) . After 3) minutes however the game came to life, we began to make inroads and getting behind the opposition lines and in the 40th minute we were given an absolute gem of a gift. The defender made a terribly undercooked backpass and mata pounced on it. Inexplicably , while mata missed his initial shot, the defender inadvertently passed to mata again to slot home. It was a strange irony that mata , a player seemingly destined to be sold ( if you dare to believe the garbage press ) , scores the first goal of the Mourinho EPL era.
From then on it seemed one way traffic , united were galvanized by the goal and more fluid and intricate and their interplay. I began to see some semblance of a typical Jose ( forgive last season ) set up. An efficient unit going for the kill without being flambouyant. The next two united goals were totally expected and it was typically satisfying Zlatan scored another goal to seal the victory .
Zlatan received an inordinate amount of ridicule for joining united. But anyone who knows their football knows he is far from finished. Eric Bailly was my standout performer. He was immense. Athletic and assured , he led the lines properly and while he may be a bit raw , at 22 he can only get better.
Overall a thoroughly satisfying performance with very few ( if any ) complaints.
