AISHA BUHARI: LOVE HER OR HATE HER She is no shrinking violet
Over the years First Ladies come and go. They have become like novelty figures to us Not important enough to direct our grievances and angst to but not entirely irrelevant for us to completely ignore. Their presence was a necessary evil one we just have to either admire or deride as the case may be. For Aisha Buhari, it was refreshing to see another First lady who seemed withdrawn, Quiet at first – which was a departure from the immediate previous Patience Jonathan who was quite Vocal shall we say. Aisha would occasionally flash a smile which usually accentuates her beauty and won herself many fans , because in our minds this must be the effortless weapon for which she handles the “no nonsense” General who we know President Buhari to be.
However, Lately the benign smiles have been rare if not non existent.. Aisha is not a happy lady right now. Why you may ask ? she is surrounded by enemies. People who either do not like her or feel threatened by her. There definitely has been some undertones that have gone down in the villa over the past months that we are oblivious of but our consciousness was thrown into the mix in October when a mystery video showed her in a angry state over something in the presidential villa. News emanating later revealed the video was taken by the daughter of powerful friend and Kinsman of the president Alhaji Mamman Daura over a domestic dispute. No official statement was made by the villa following that incident that went viral in social circles but it was the first suggestion that all was not well in Aso rock
Fast forward 3 months to December and the First Lady, Aisha Buhari has come out to allege that Alhaji Mamman Daura gave a “presidential directive” without her husband’s knowledge to scrap her office. Mamman Daura, a nephew of President Muhammadu Buhari lives in Glass House inside the presidential villa.
Aisha in a statement she personally signed and made available to the press Wednesday morning , said (in part )the directive scrapping the office of the first lady was issued by Mamman Daura, using a presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu. Tagged, ” Garba Shehu Has Gone Beyond His Boundaries”, she said the directive embarrassed the president. The statement reads: ” Nigeria’s development is hinged on the ability of public officials to execute their mandates professionally, and to be shining examples in their various areas of endeavor. It is not a good sign when officials abandoned their responsibility and start clutching at straws.
As spokesperson of the President, he has the onerous responsibility of managing the image of the President and all the good works that he is executing in the country. Rather than face this responsibility squarely, he has shifted his loyalty from the President to others who have no stake in the pact that the President signed with Nigerians on May 29, 2015 and 2019. ” To make matters worse, Mr. Shehu has presented himself to these people as a willing tool and executioner of their antics, from the corridors of power even to the level of interfering with the family affairs of the President. This should not be so. The blatant meddling in the affairs of a First Lady of a country is a continuation of the prodigal actions of those that he serves.
Aisha and President Buhari
going back to the incident of the infamous video in October she added:
Mr. Shehu was privy and part of the plan and it’s execution and he was shocked when he realized that I had publicized my return to Nigeria on October 12, 2019 and cleared the air on the many rumors that took over social media, a job he was supposed to do but kept mute to cause more confusion and instability for his Principal and his family. “Garba then, vented his anger on the National Television Authority (NTA) Management insisting that the media crew to my office must be sacked. He succeeded in getting them suspended for doing their job. I had to intervene to save the innocent staff from losing their means of livelihood by involving the Department of State Services (DSS) in order to ascertain roles played by key actors in the saga.
Garba when contacted to respond confirmed the statement emanated from the 1st lady but said he would rather not join issues with her.
Its Obvious there are fractures in the setup of things around the president. A situation where his wife and principal officer(s) are at logger heads is far from conducive for him to focus on the important duties of delivering the dividends of democracy to Nigerians. Not much is known of where his support lies in all this, but there was a rumor early in November alleging that he was set to marry another wife. That has been denied by the presidential image makers as untrue, but we all know the no smoke without fire adage.
In Aisha’s case, you have to admire her tenacity to take on this fight and fearlessly defend her position in the framework of influence in the villa. How much damage or victory she emerges with is anyone’s guess. She has made a move in the chessgame by coming out in the open all guns blazing, lets see how they respond.
