A star is Born as Onuachu announces himself on the Scene as Super Eagles beat Pharoahs 1-0 in Asaba

Every once in a while a star erupts on the Nigerian Football scene and captures not just the headlines but the heart of every football enthusiast (Fan and journalist alike). It may be on the back of his Club form or following a superb Debut for the National team just like 6ft 5in Paul Onuachu did last night in Asaba.

Previously unheard of, the Tall gangling striker reminiscent of Victor Agali of yore was brilliant wasting no time to announce himself with a fantastic strike in less than 10 seconds of the kick off. The goal had everything Strength, skill, and marksmanship showing once again we may have something special on our hands..

The game itself was not of the Highest quality. The Egyptians tried to bring that Characteristic North African flair but a combination of Dogged defending and maybe the uneven pitch at the Stephen Keshi stadium were stumbling blocks. Gernot Rohr went for a relatively full strength side against the Mohammed Salah-less Pharaohs.

The starting line up was:

Akpeyi; Shehu, Balogun, Troost-Ekong, Collins; Ogu, Ndidi, Iwobi; Simon, Onuachu, Onyekuru.

I had my eyes on onyekwuru as i wanted to see what every one had been raving about him for. But alas it was Onuachu who got my attention and from there there was no looking back.

Here was how the goal happened, after Kick off , Iwobi sent a hopeful punt up towards the debuting Onuachu..The Egyptian defender seemed to have gotten to it first but, you don’t have 6ft 5inch frame without having  long legs to go with it. Onuachu Poked his leg at the ball got a piece of it fortuitously,  pushed forward, steadied himself and let fly a right foot rocket that found the top right corner.

The crowd went wild and Onuachu was mobbed by his team mates. A star was born with that strike. Nigeria went on to win the game and im sure Gernot Rohr will be Giving himself a pat on the back for this acquisition.
